1- Slaves were not allowed to learn to read and write, vote or attend school.

2- Most baby slaves couldn't stay with their parents and often had to go from one plantation to another.

3- When Harriet Tubman was a fugitive, she had to hide and travel by night to avoid slave catchers. Hopefully she could stay in a network of safe and friendly houses during the day?

4- Rosa Parks wasn't allowed to sit in front of the bus because of the segregation. When the police arrived, she refused to move, so she had to go to prison.

5- During the Jim Crow laws, marriage between a white person and a black person were not allowed.

6- Ruby Bridges had to be escorted by federal marshals. Segregation had been declared illegal by the Supreme Court and Blacks couldn't go to school with white children, even though many white people were against that decision.
