The Aborigines were the first inhabitants in Australia.  It is believed they came from Indonesia about 40 000 years ago. When the first English settlers arrived, there were over 750.000 Aborigines organised in about 400 different clans (= tribes) and speaking about 300 different languages. They fished, hunted and gathered food from the surrounding land.

In 1770 the English explorer James Cook took possession of New Zealand and Australia.

In 1787 the English government decided to transport prisoners from England to Australia.

The first 776 convicts arrived in Sydney harbour after a eight-month journey on January 26th, 1788. At the end of their sentence the convicts were given a piece of land and became free settlers.

Nowadays many Australians are convicts' descendants.
