    À qui font référence les pronoms soulignés :

    § 1- HIS mother = the mother of the young man (the young man's mother) la mère du jeune homme

    § 2- Maybe THEY rented room = the owners of the small house in the woods : an elderly man and woman (the small house's owners) Les propriétaires de la petite maison dans les bois: un  homme et une femme âgés

    § 2- to have THEM stay = the young man and his wife

    § 3- they tried to insist on paying for THIS = for coffee and cake

    § 4- THEY left an enveloppe = the young man and his wife

    § 5 - THAT house burnt to the ground = the small  house in the woods where they  - the young man and his wife- slept the night before (la petite maison  dans les bois où ils- le jeune homme et sa femme- avaient dormi la nuit précédente)
