  • In order to start my presentation about forms and locations of power, it will be necessary for me to define what power means first. The power, according to the dictionary ( which one ? ) indicates the ability or the capacity of doing something or acting in a particular way but also the political or social authority or control over others. Nevertheless, this power can be unfair and unacceptable and can generate vivacious protestations. In order to illustrate this type of fight against oppression I would like to talk about American Indian Movement in USA. The struggle lead by Native American did it bear fruit ? First, I will deal with the Indian Movement power (I) then I will talk about native Americans nowadays (II).

    I-The Indian Movement power

Foremost, a little bit of historical context.

In the wake of the colonization in 1492, Native Americans have little by little lost their rights just as their lands. Moreover, this population reduced drastically, the European’s arrival was the source of wars, diseases ( voluntary and involuntary ), mistreatment ( slavery, rape, slaughter ), important wave of immigration as well as despoliation of grounds. We talk about martyr people of USA.

It was in 1879 thanks to the stubbornness of Susette La Flesche ( bright eyes ), Joseph La Flesche’s daughter, last leader of Omahas’s tribe, that during the Standing Bear’s lawsuit she revealed to the reporters the terrible ( something is missing here ) lot of Natives Americans. As the outcome of this trial, Native Americans were recognized as individual in your own right receiving the same rights as American citizens. This victory marked the start of the struggle for the recognition of their rights and pursued with Susette’s convention in USA and abroad ( UK, Scotland ) along with the meeting at the White House with Rutherford B. Hayes. Following this fight the government granted the citizenship for Native Americans in 1924.

However, the struggle does not stop here. At all events, in 1968 appears the American Indian Movement lead by Dennis Bank and Leonard Peltier. This “Red Power” ( explain why it is called like that ) wanted to be heard organizing demonstration. For instance, I choose a picture of the occupation during 71 days of Wounded Knee within Pine Ridge’s reservation in 1973 by 200 members of AIM in order to protest against life’s conditions in reservation but also bribery, racism and persecution whose they were victim.

At the end of the siege, justice gave reason to AIM producing locals conflicts as well as the death of 2 FBI agents among who Leonard Peltier was accused then convicted; he is at the moment the oldest political prisoner and passed the sad record of Mandela. This dramatic story resonated like a thunderclap and speed up the process. In 1977, trib’s leader went to Genève at the UN ( United Nations ) so as to work on establishment of international standard. Similarly, in 1981 another convention took place, gathering for the first time other native’s leader. This autochthon question became universal.

It was in the wake of these UN conventions along with important 13 years of studies that a United State statement about autochthon right was adopted in september 2007.
